WHAT IS CHEMOTHERAPY?
Chemotherapy, also known as Chemotherapy-Oncologic Procedure is “the treatment of disease by means of chemicals that have a specific toxic effect upon the disease-producing microorganisms or that selectively destroy cancerous tissue.” dictionary definition
Individuals who chose chemotherapy as a treatment option will receive intravenous injection or infusion of one or more drugs into the blood stream through a shunt. The shunt is typically implanted in either the arm or the collarbone. The combination of drugs each patient receives is commonly referred to as a chemo “cocktail”. The success rates and side effects are dependent upon your specific combination of drugs.
Each cocktail is administered at different rates depending on multiple variables. Usually a series of visits are required lasting from one to several hours.
Administration also varies. Some drugs are administered orally and others via battery powered pack.
